What to Do if You Get Separated While Diving
Dive buddy separation can happen even with the best planning. 🐠 Staying calm and knowing what to do can make all the difference. 💡 Here’s a quick guide to handling the situation:
1️⃣ Stop and Look
Pause immediately. 🔄 Turn 360° and scan for your buddy’s bubbles or movement. 👀 Look up and down—they may be above or below you.
2️⃣ Wait at Depth
Hold your position for about a minute. ⏱️ This gives your buddy a chance to notice you’re missing and return.
3️⃣ Ascend Slowly
If no reconnection happens, ascend carefully, maintaining safety stop procedures. 🐡 Always monitor your surroundings and air supply.
4️⃣ Signal at the Surface
Once at the surface, inflate your SMB 🟧 and look for your buddy or the dive boat. 🚤 Signal for assistance if needed.
Prevention is Key
Always review separation procedures during your dive briefing. ✅ Dive with an SMB and ensure your buddy understands your dive plan. By staying calm and prepared, you’ll handle separations with confidence.
Dive smart, dive safe! 🌊
